Surgical Pre-op Navigator/Diabetes

Preparing For Surgery Progress:

45% complete

Glucometer for DiabeticsIf you are a diabetic, you will likely need to reduce your medications when starting your pre-op diet, as blood sugars will start coming down right away.  Typically, we will reduce all of your diabetes meds by half of your normal dosage, but one of our team members will go over your regimen in detail at your pre-op visit.

We recommend that you let your primary care physician (or endocrinologist) know that you will be changing these medication dosages.  If they disagree with our recommended plan please follow their guidelines and also let us know.

While your specific regimen will be addressed at your pre-op visit, it may be helpful to know that if you take an SGLT2 inhibitor, it will need to be stopped at least 5 days prior to surgery and cannot be resumed until 4 weeks after.  These medications include:

  • Invokamet (canagliflozin and metformin)
  • Farxiga (dapagliflozin)
  • Xigduo XR (dapagliflozin and metformin)
  • Jardiance (empagliflozin)
  • Glyxambi (empagliflozin and linagliptin)
  • Steglatro (ertugliflozin)

We recommend that all diabetic patients make an appointment with the provider that manages their diabetes around 1-2 weeks after surgery.
